Obituary for Asa John Smith

Asa John Smith of Novi was born August 17, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to Clarence V. and Naomi V. (nee: Shaw) Smith.
He died Friday, June 19, 2020 at the age of 86.
Mr. Smith is the beloved husband of Carol, whom he married in 1970, father of Christopher Smith, grandfather of Marly Smith and brother of George Smith.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Barb Enzor.

Asa grew up on the shores of Walled Lake. He loved to hunt, fish, water & snow ski. He was a competition slalom water skier and was certified professional snow ski instructor teaching for years at Boyne Mountain. Asa also coached AAA youth hockey for decades in the Detroit area and touched many young players lives as both a mentor and coach.

Asa proudly served in the US Army stationed in Italy and in the Tank Division. At the age of 18, Asa began working at Ford Motor Co. as an Apprentice Electrician. Asa was a member of I.B.E.W Local #58 and held various roles with the companies he worked with. He also coached the Local 58 hockey team as well.

Mr. Smith was very active in the Novi community and local and state level politics. He served as president of LAHA (Lakes Area Homeowners Association) for many years. Mr Smith was also a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of the Shriners.

A private family memorial service will be held later due to the current restrictions of public gatherings in place due to the COVID -19 Virus. Memorials to the American Heart Association or the Shriners Hospital for children would be appreciated.
