Obituary for Betty Jean Schnelz

Betty Jean Schnelz, age 87, of Novi, MI passed away on February 26, 2021. She was born May 18, 1933 to Clyde and Florence Van Eaton in Detroit MI. She married Gene Schnelz on April 7, 1956. Gene and Betty had a loving marriage full of family and laughter until Gene’s passing in December of 2020.

She is survived by her three children, Kurt Schnelz (Maha), Elizabeth (Ralph) Rexroat, and Rebecca Schnelz. She is also survived by her four grandchildren Stephanie Beach (Robert), Steven Schnelz, Carrie Rexroat, and Jacob Rexroat (Katie), and two great-grandchildren Grace and Bradley Beach.

Betty grew up in Michigan ultimately graduating from Royal Oak High School. She graduated from Mt. Carmel nursing school in1954 and eventually went on to earn her BSN. Betty worked as a nurse in many different areas. Private doctor, hospital, Visiting Nurse Association, and finally retired from the Oakland County Health Department. She also taught nursing classes at Madonna University. Betty loved nursing and was committed to her patients. She kept up on the education credits she needed to maintain her nursing license even after retiring because she loved learning.

She was also a very creative person and enjoyed crocheting not only for her family but for charity as well. Betty loved to weave and her favorite project was weaving the material for the christening gown worn by her grandchildren. Her creativity extended into the kitchen where she loved experimenting with new recipes and altering favorite ones. She was a voracious reader and often would finish multiple books in a week’s time.

Betty will be remembered for her strong faith in God which allowed her to be the backbone of the family. She was expansive with her love and encouragement and gave excellent advice when asked. She was generous with her time and was never too busy to listen to family or friends. Her wit was quick and her sense of humor near the surface. She loved practical jokes and was quick to laugh. Her presence will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
