Obituary for Brian K. William

Rev. Brian K. William, age 43, passed peacefully in his sleep and went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2019. Brian was a devoted husband, father, pastor, and friend.

Brian was born December 2, 1975 in Changhua, Taiwan to Raymond and Nancy William and grew up primarily in Corvallis, Oregon. Brian was the 18th member of his family to attend Washington State University (Go Cougs!) where he studied Environmental Engineering. Brian always had a great interest in the world and its peoples. He could, and frequently did, talk with anyone as well as being adept with computers. But it was his love of God that led him to attend Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary where he studied to become a pastor.

He first served at the United Methodist Church in Burlington, IL before moving to Michigan to be closer to family. There he served at Birmingham First United Methodist where he helped run the contemporary service and missions, and then West Bloomfield United Methodist as their lead Pastor. There he focused on growing and caring for the multicultural congregation, creating community ties between the diverse religions and peoples, mentoring young people and other pastors, and leading and serving in missionary work from Detroit to Jeremie, Haiti, among many other things.

Brian met the love of his life, Monica, in 1998. His wife and children were the most important things in his life, as he was to theirs. To them he was a goofball, hugger, movie fan, lunch maker, bad ‘dad joke’ teller, chauffer & social director, short-order cook, soccer coach, photographer, Lego League coach, dream-maker and biggest fan. He was quirky, loving, accepting, intelligent, silly, curious, personable, kind, an out-of-the-box thinker, a mentor, and a friend to all. He took a homeless man to McDonald’s for a meal and conversation when Monica and he were on an anniversary date, and he would dress up in a muscle suit, walk around town, and interview people asking if they worked out, how they got strong, and then tie that into regularly working on your relationship with God to keep it strong.

He had a great passion for many things. He loved music and kept a personal ‘Top 100’ song ranking of each decade. One of his early callings was to the musician Rich Mullins where co-created and hosted the site which was dedicated to Rich’s music. He also loved woodworking and politics. He was frequently the impetus for cousin get-togethers, or fun and unique 40th birthdays (feather bowling anyone?)

He is survived by his beloved wife Monica (née Moore), his three dear children Haven, Miriam, and Danielle, his parents, Raymond and Nancy William, his sister Kamala, nephews Michael Perry, Robbie Moore, and Andrew and Alex Gillespie, and nieces Melissa (née Perry) Petrillo, Rachel Williams, and Katie Moore. Also survived by in-laws Barbara (Clark) Williams and Larry (Janice) Moore. Brian died from heart disease.

Visitation will be Friday, April 26, 2019 from 2-8pm at West Bloomfield United Methodist (4100 Walnut Lake Road, West Bloomfield,) as well as Saturday April 27, 2019 from 10-11am at Northville First United Methodist (777 Eight Mile Rd, Northville) with memorial services to follow at 11am at Northville United Methodist. A luncheon will follow. The funeral preparations were handled by Lynch and Sons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are being received for Haven, Miriam, and Danielle’s education and to establish a scholarship in his name at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary. Please send gifts to West Bloomfield United Methodist Church (4100 Walnut Lake Road, West Bloomfield, MI, 48322) in Brian’s name.
