Obituary for Dr. Grace Agnes Peapples Monczynski

Dr. Grace Agnes Peapples Monczyknski was born on February 16, 1936 to John Middlecamp and Rebecca Lillian Harrison-Middlecamp in Muskegon, Michigan. She graduated from Muskegon Senior High School and Muskegon Community College prior to receiving a BA at Wayne State University, an MA and Sp.A at Eastern Michigan University and an Ed.D. at Western Michigan University.

At 15 years old, Grace began working at Cole’s Bakery, where she was employed for three years. While there she met Robert William Peapples, who she went onto marry. After leaving Cole’s Bakery she worked at Plumb’s Supermarket for two years. In 1957 Bob and Grace moved to Detroit for Bob’s technical training at Electronics Institute. They had two children, Carrie Lynn and Ronald prior to divorcing in 1967.

Helping people was at the core of what Grace loved to do. She was a lifelong educator. She taught grades 3, 5 and 6 and Learning Disabled for 10 years then served as principal for 19 years at William H. Thorne School in the Westwood School District in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. During this time, she also taught the Dale Carnegie Course evenings for 25 years and served as an adjunct instructor at Eastern Michigan University. After retirement from the school district, Grace conducted classes for Ford Motor Company for 13 years.

In September 1986, Grace met Victor Leonard Monczynski through a newspaper ad. Immediately there was a connection and on June 27, 1987 they married. A year later in September 1988 they moved to West Bloomfield, Michigan. Together Grace and Victor loved to play golf and travel extensively both home and abroad. In early 2007 Victor became ill and Grace took on the role of full time caregiver. A loving and devoted wife she cared for him until his death on October 23, 2011. Victor was the love of Grace’s life. She continued to love him until she passed away on September 11, 2019.

A devote christian, Grace taught Sunday School and sang First Soprano in the choir at Faith Reformed Church in Muskegon. Later she was a church and choir member at Allen Park Presbyterian Church before becoming a parishioner at St. William Catholic Church in Walled Lake in 1988.

Grace had a deep appreciation and love for art, music and dance. Above all else she thrived in helping others and caring for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have known her.

Grace was the cherished wife of the late Victor Monczynski. Loving mother of Carrie (Joseph) Mazza, Ronald (Lisa) Peapples, Michele (Steve) Slater, Joyce (Robert) Elliott and the late Victor Jr. Monterey. Proud grandmother of Ashley, Brandon, Joshua, Lindsey (Bret), Brittany (Shaun), Heather, Brent, Lauren (Ryan) and Michael (Andrea) and great-grandma of John Victor and Preston. Dear sister of the late Sharie (Brad) Geeting and Ruth (the late Wes) Van Dam. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews extended family member and friends.

Grace’s life will be celebrated with a Funeral Service at 5:30 pm on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 340 N. Pontiac Trail in Walled Lake. Her family will receive friends for visitation following the service until 9 pm Sunday.
