Obituary for Elizabeth Helen "Lily" Nicastri

Elizabeth (Lily) Nicastri died peacefully of natural causes early in the morning of Christmas Day. As she wanted, she died in her condo in Wixom, MI. Lily had been under the wonderful care of Angela Hospice, Livonia, after breaking her hip in 2014.

Elizabeth was born on October 19, 1920 in Stamford, Connecticut to Elizabeth Teresa and Peter James Meade. She had three brothers, who preceded her in death.

On November 22, 1942 Lily married Jack Mike Nicastri. They had six children together.

Elizabeth graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit in 1938. She had training as a secretary and became the youngest court stenographer in Detroit’s District Court. In her career as a bookkeeper she worked for many years as head of the billing department for St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital (when they were still located in Ann Arbor). She also worked for the City of South Lyon and New Hudson Elementary School. When she finally retired, she continued on as the treasurer of the Rosary Altar Society, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in South Lyon and volunteered at Providence Hospital in Novi.

Lily enjoyed traveling, as she made several trips to her beloved Ireland; she enjoyed reading, especially history books and poetry; she brightened many people’s lives with cards and letters filled with funny family anecdotes. She was a long time member of a bowling league in South Lyon and loved playing cards with her family, friends and neighbors. However, the thing she loved most in the world was to spend time with her family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Elizabeth is survived by Marjorie Shackett of Walled Lake, MI; James and Andrea Nicastri of Dexter, MI; Mark Nicastri of Wixom, MI; Paul R and Frances Nicastri of Howell, MI; and Susan Brehmer and her husband, Franklin H. Brehmer of Wixom, MI. She also has 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Other survivors include her sister in law, Connie Meade of Warren, MI; her cousin Rev. Robert Brandenberger of St. Vincent’s Seminary in Philadelphia, PA and Kyle Burch, her young caretaker, whom she loved like one of her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; her three brothers; her husband, Jack Mike Nicastri, who died in 1977 and her eldest son, Michael P. Nicastri who died 3-3-2001.

Funeral mass from St. William Catholic Church, 531 Common Street, Walled Lake, Thursday 10 AM (In State 9:30 AM). Interment New Hudson Cemetery. Friends may visit Lynch and Sons Funeral Home, 340 North Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake (3 Blks. South of Maple Rd.) Wednesday 3-8 PM (Rosary 7 PM). Memorials to Angela Hospice or Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament appreciated.
