Obituary for Ellen Florence Ryan

Ellen Florence Wallace was born in September 17, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan. Her father was a wholesale grocer and her mother was a stay at home mom. She had two older sisters, Jessie and Dorothy, and an older brother, Angus. She was part of a warm and happy family growing up in Detroit during the Great Depression.

She graduated high school in 1942. She went to Wheaton College in Wheaton Illinois and graduated with a dual bachelors degree in Physical Education and Spanish in 1947 (a time when only 3% of women received a college degree).

Her brother Angus’ friend, Ernest Graham Ryan, came to visit Angus in 1947 and was introduced to Ellen by her brother and father. Ellen and Ernest fell in love and were married in 1948. The had four children: Ellen, Jerry, David, and Douglas. She lived in Detroit from 1948 to 1972 and then in West Bloomfield from 1972 to the present day. Her husband passed away in 1992.

Together with her husband, their four kids grew up in a loving home and had 15 grandchildren: Michael, William, Matthew, Candace, Thomas, Elaine, Joseph, Meredith, Samuel, Sarah, Jessica, Tyler, Leah, Naomi, and Graham.

During the 70’s and 80’s she worked at J. L. Hudson’s Department Store where she made many new friends who would often go traveling together.

Ellen Ryan had a good life and passed away on May 2, 2019, she will be missed.

Ellen's will be laid to rest with a private graveside service on Saturday, May 18, 2018 at Walled Lake Cemetery.
