Obituary for Florence Edna Marie Arendt

Florence Edna Marie Arendt of Farmington Hills, formerly of Southfield was born in Auburn, Beaver Township, Bay County, Michigan (near Saginaw) on March 2, 1921.  She was the ninth of eleven children born to Rev. Frederick William and Katherine Margaretha (nee: Geyer) Rutkowsky.  She died November 27, 2017 at Beaumont Hospital (Botsford Campus) in Farmington Hills at the age of 96.

Mrs. Arendt is the beloved wife of the late Herbert John Arendt (d.1978) whom she married at Outer Drive Faith Lutheran Church in Detroit on November 22, 1945 with her brother, Reverend Walter Rutkowsky officiating.  She is the loving mother of Audrey (Russell) Hart and the late Gordon Arendt.  Grandmother of Paul (Felice) Arendt, Erica Hart and Gary Hart.  Great grandmother of Jayden and Sienna.  She is preceded in death by her 10 brothers and sisters: Martha Paul, Meta Timm, Irene Wilkie, Lydia Nuechterlein, Reverend Walter Rutkowsky, Esther Gruber, Lorna Kemp Cheney, Doris Trautmann, Reverend  Frederick Rutkowsky and Earl Rutkowsky.  She is survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Florence enjoyed living in Michigan all her life. She appreciated the beauty of nature-especially birds such as cardinals, robins and chickadees, and flowers such as the towering sunflowers that grew in the nearby fields near her childhood home, the church parsonage, where her father was the minister of the red brick country church, Zion Lutheran, next door.  Her early years were spent growing up in a minister’s family.  As a youth she attended Zion Lutheran Church and School in Beaver Township, Bay County, Michigan.  She went on to graduate from Fordson High School in Dearborn.

Florence loved Michigan’s fresh water lakes and sandy beaches.  One of her favorite memories was of Lake Huron where, with her husband and young family, spent many idyllic summers in their sky blue cottage “Up in the Thumb” in Caseville, Michigan. Many lovely times with family and friends!

Florence enjoyed people and was so cheerful and welcoming to all.  She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone.  She was a very loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt.  She loved her family, friends and her church. She was a faithful and loyal person who showed kindness to others. She enjoyed the company of people and her senior activities as a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bloomfield Hills, although during her last years she was "homebound", living in an assisted-living residence. Despite her cognitive decline she always maintained her loving personality.

Professionally, Florence was a para-professional for 18 years at Kennedy Elementary School in the Southfield School District.

She will be dearly missed and is now in the heavenly arms of Jesus.
