Fr. Edward L. Scheuerman of Livonia was born May 20, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to Frederick C. and Irene C. (nee: Kloepfer) Scheuerman. He died March 17, 2017 at the age of 91.

Fr. Scheuerman is the beloved brother of Bernice (Charles) Chinzi-Ruemenapp, Estelle (Al) Brengman, Fred (Christine) Scheuerman, Helen (the late Thomas) Morley, Robert (the late Joan) Scheuerman and Thomas (Linda) Scheuerman. Fr. Edward is survived by over 180 nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews.

Fr. Scheuerman attended Detroit Guardian Angels grade school, Detroit St. Anthony High School, Sacred Heart Seminary and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He was ordained May 20, 1950 and celebrated his first mass at Guardian Angels Parish in Detroit. During his 67 years as a Catholic priest, Fr. Scheuerman served a variety of positions within the Catholic Church. He was on faculty of Sacred Heart Seminary as well as past principal of Aquinas High School in Southgate. He served as associate pastor at St. Bartholomew Parish in Detroit and also served on the faculty of Bishop Gallagher and Regina High Schools in Harper Woods.

In 1971 he was named pastor of St. Martin Parish in Detroit. Father left the people of St. Martin with a rich legacy, he was to them and for them priest, pastor, preacher, man of prayer, ecumenist, leader, evangelizer, world traveler, gourmet, host and musician. He was named pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Wyandotte in 1981 and was all of those things to the people of St. Patrick, including friend.

Fr. Scheuerman held a B.A. degree in Philosophy from Sacred Heart Seminary (1946), a M.A. in Counseling from the University of Detroit (1958), a S.T.L. in Theology from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. (1950). He has done continuing graduate education in Counseling and Education at the University of Michigan. In 1985-1986 he spent a sabbatical in study at Catholic University and in the Holy Land majoring in Scriptural Studies. In August 1987 he participated in an Ecumenical Religious Studies program at Lincoln College, Oxford, England.

Fr. Scheuerman retired from administrative pastoring on July 1, 1995 to do freelance pastoral ministry as weekend parish helper, administering parishes for pastors on sabbatical, teaching bible courses to help the ordinary parishioner see the bible as “user friendly” and speaking to teachers and parents on topics relating to religious education of adults and children. In his retirement he also coordinated a program of “Self Review” for the clergy of the archdiocese.

Fr. Scheuerman lived his retirement with other retired priests at the Senior Clergy Village in Livonia adjacent to Madonna University and the Felician Sisters Motherhouse.
