Obituary for Graham "Paul" Wellington

Graham “Paul” Wellington of Commerce Twp. was born May 17, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to Graham Frank and Florence Barbara (nee: Glueck) Wellington. He died peacefully on January 24, 2019, at the age of 88.

Mr. Wellington is the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Gertrude R. “Gee” Wellington (d. 2014). Loving father of: Heidi (Dan) Valeen, Theresa (the late Leon) Straub, Graham Paul “Duke” (Amy) Wellington, Jr., Michael (Annette) Wellington, and Roxanne Wellington. Dear grandfather of Melissa (Edward), Joseph, Cassidy, Max, Rick and Michael “Luke”. Preceded in death by his siblings William (Gloria), Mary (the late Dick), Jack and George and survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Mr. Wellington served in the US navy for nearly 30 years. His service included nearly five years of active duty, during which time he fought in the Korean War and earned a battle star and Republic of Korea presidential unit citation along with several other medals and awards. He then completed his college education at the University of Michigan. Afterwards, he served in the naval reserves as an executive officer of three intelligence units and commanding officer of two intelligence units. He worked extensively with several US military intelligence centers for the rest of his career. He retired from the Navy in 1990.

Mr. Wellington enjoyed spending time with his family. He took his children on camping trips, hosted barbecues, traveled abroad, and attended all of the plays and sports events that his children and grandchildren participated in. He dined with Dick and Roberta Higginbotham on Fridays, but also played poker with the old boys in the neighborhood. He liked to stay active, going to the gym and taking walks to Hawk Lake, but in the evenings he loved watching war documentaries and classic movies. He loved and took care of his wife Gee until she passed away in 2014. As he got older, he enjoyed outings to the cinema and to the casino, and was always lucky. He made annual trips to Washington D.C. to visit his brother Bill. In recent years, he left the Michigan winters behind for sunny Boca Raton where his son and daughter both lived with their families.
