Obituary for Gretchen Benyi

Gretchen Benyi, 88, of Walled Lake, peacefully passed away Tuesday morning, July 28, 2020, at Suncrest Senior Living in Milford.

Born April 1, 1932, the daughter of the late Frieda Kramer Neukam and Joseph Neukam, Gretchen grew up in Detroit and graduated from Redford High School. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.

Gretchen or Grami - as she was known by many, was an avid traveler and reader. She served as a member of the Walled Lake Library Board and was a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Walled Lake. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Milford.
Gretchen is survived by her husband, Joseph Benyi of Walled Lake, MI; her three sons, Paul (JoAnn) Phelps of Fenton, MI, Daniel (Barbara) Phelps of Novi, MI, and Steven (Suzanne) Phelps of Dewitt Township, MI.

She is survived by seven grandchildren, Eric Phelps (Kristen) of Greenville, MI, Laura (Ross) Zeldes of Palm Bay, FL, Amanda (Stephen) Galloway of Marietta, GA, Rebecca (Jaime) Thurmond of Mexico City, MX, Kelley (Scott) Jettie of Whitmore Lake, MI, Andrew (Amanda) Phelps of East Lansing, MI, and Timothy Phelps of Indianapolis, IN.

She had 15 great grandchildren, including one; Beatrice Thurmond, who preceded her in death. She is survived by Ava and Knowlton Phelps, Cooper Zeldes, William, Anderson and Caroline Galloway, Lucille, Amelia, and Winston Thurmond, Benjamin and Grace Jettie, and Leila and Jensen Phelps.

She is survived by sisters Elaine Bell, Judie Erickson, and Jennifer Bloomquist; brothers Ronald Neukam and Rande Neukam, and by Joe Benyi’s children and their families.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
