Obituary for Harold "Al" Bodenham

Al was born on August 6, 1936, in Windsor, Ontario. He was the 1st born child of three born to Harry and Hilda (nee Ashton) Bodenham, and as he would always say “only his mother called him Harold.” Al passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at the age of 82.

Al loved sports, and as a young man, before he joined the Canadian Air Force, in 1954, he played hockey briefly for the Windsor Spitfires, and later coached hockey for the Inkster boys’ teams for many years, where he met some of his best life-long friends. Everyone who knew him, knew he loved his Lions, even when he didn’t, and enjoyed playing and watching golf; both of which he did much of in his retirement. However, Al’s favorite events, were those he attended that included his grandchildren as the players, or musicians; nothing made him more proud than to watch is 3 grandchildren in their specialty sport, or concert, and you could find him traveling from Memphis, TN., to Indianapolis, IN., to Michigan to be there, front row watching and rooting them on.

An avid reader and boater, you would often find Al relaxing on his houseboat in Canada, with a good book and a scotch and soda, enjoying the faint breeze off the water, and listening to some light jazz on the radio. You may also find him jumping off his boat to help dock an incoming boat, or tossing a beer to a neighboring boater.

Al was known for his vibrant humor and fun-loving personality, and would quite often be found telling and sending jokes about his beloved Lions, or making people laugh with his quick wit.

Al was a devoted husband to his wife Phyllis of 56 years, loving father to Shelley Bodenham-MacKenzie (daughter), Steven Bodenham (son), and Donnie Bodenham (son) who proceeded him in death in 1966. He was the very proud Grandpa to Colin MacKenzie, Olivia Bodenham, and Luke Bodenham, and dear brother to Donald (Merge) Bodenham, and Barbara (John) James. He was also a beloved Uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

A private celebration of life will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2018, at the Links of Novi in Michigan, followed by a burial of his remains in the spring of 2019.
