Obituary for James Mathias Justen

James Mathias Justen of Brighton, formerly of Bloomfield Twp. MI, was born on September 12, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to Charles and Wanda (nee: Polcyn) Justen. He died surrounded by his family, October 4, 2012 at the age of 90.

Jim is the beloved husband of 65 years to Vada (nee: Fleck). Loving father of Janice (Michael) Cook, Joan (Timothy) Houran, Jane (Randy) Evans, Jennifer (Tim) Lynch, Josey Dovichi, James (Kathy) Justen, Jr. and June (Michael) Keane. He is the grandfather of Michael H. (Eydie Garland) Cook, Jr., Maggie A. (Roger) Watts, Matthew T. (Jamie Bishop) Cook, Mason A. Cook, Aimee (Chad) Pifer, Jeffrey (Kerry) Houran, Jessica M. Evans, Timothy (Jamie) Lynch, Jr., Kevin (Melissa) Lynch, Kathryn (Mark) Capstick, Jennifer (Tim) Lawrence, Bryan Dovichi, Erin Justen, Jill Justen, Lisa Justen, Jenna Keane, Brenan Keane, Bridget Keane and the late Edward Keane. Great Grandfather of Eypie and Ellie Garland Cook, Brandon Michael Watts, Jacob, Alaina and Amanda Pifer, Carson and Isabella Houran, Ella, Brennan, Caroline, Henry, Addison and Livie Lynch, Kaden, Abigail and Lucy Capstick and Avery and Emerson Lawrence. Dear brother of: Chuck (Lee) Justen, Eleanor (the late Verl) Hiller, Teresa (the late Joe) Deak, Joe (Ella Mae) Justen, Gerald (Grace) Justen, the late Catherine (the late Raymond) LaPlante, the late Frank (the late Kathy) Justen, and the late Rita (the late Don) Cameron. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews extended family members and friends, including his wonderful caregivers Lulu, Ellen and Sherry.

Jim and Vada met when Vada was a Freshmen and Jim was a Junior at Central Catholic High School through Vada’s classmate and Jim’s sister Eleanor. From 1942-1946 Jim was serving in Japan, the Philippines, and other small Pacific Islands during WWII as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Upon his return he received a grant to go to University of Toledo where he earned a degree in Business Administration. Jim and Vada were married May 30, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Church in Maumee, Ohio. Jim began his working career as an Advertising Executive with Burroughs and they later moved from Ohio to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and lived in their home on Quarton Rd. for 35 years before moving to Brighton. After Jim retired, they were able to enjoy traveling to many countries around the world. Jim and Vada enjoyed many other activities together including, golf, tennis, skiing, and of course entertaining with family and friends. Their example of love, fidelity, and friendship toward each other after 65 years is truly an inspiration.

Funeral mass from St. Patrick Catholic Church 711 Rickett Rd. Brighton, MI Monday 10:30 AM (In State 9:30 AM). Interment St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Brighton. Friends may visit Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 340 N. Pontiac Trail Walled Lake, MI (3 Blks. S. of Maple Rd.) Sunday 2-9 PM (Vigil Service 7 PM). Memorials to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or the charity of donor’s choice appreciated.
