Obituary for Jane Johnson

Jane Johnson was born October 18, 1923, the 5th of 9 children born to John I. and Beulah M. Johnson, in Detroit, Michigan. Brothers; John, Peyton and Charles Johnson, and sisters; Lelah Wilburn, Anna Strauther and Christina Martin preceded her in death.

Jane was a product of Detroit Public Schools, graduating from Northwestern High School. She went on to earn bachelor and masters degrees in education from Wayne State University. Jane taught Special Education at Logan Elementary in Detroit. She held leadership positions as the assistant principal at Crosman Elementary, and principal at Stephens, Cooper and Balch Elementary schools. She was also a critique teacher at WSU, supervising and mentoring student teachers.

Jane was a faithful, lifelong member of historic St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Detroit where she actively participated in the life of the church, especially the credit union, daycare center, David A. Harmon Scholarship Committee, and designing and installing all of the church bulletin boards.

Travel was also an integral part of Jane’s life. She traveled all over Europe, Canada, and most states in the U.S. Combining two of her loves, Jane often traveled to visit family in California; Cassopolis, Michigan; Reidsville, North Carolina, and Florida. Jane also traveled with her sister Anna to research the family’s genealogy, tracing their ancestry back to their Civil War patriot and descendant, Emery Allen. Jane was a member of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, and often gave genealogy talks to schools, as well as local community and religious groups.

She is survived by 2 sisters: Mildred Harvin (late Jimmie Harvin), Agatha Pitts (Louis); special niece, Marianne; and many nieces and nephews.

Private interment has taken place at Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. A memorial service will be held at a later date due to the current restrictions of public gatherings in place due to the COVID -19 Virus.
