Obituary for John McKissic

John McKissic was born on May 27, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He was the only child of the late Paul and Edith McKissic. John passed away on October 2, 2019 in White Lake, Michigan with his family by his side.

A proud Army Veteran, John served his country during the Vietnam War earning the rank of SP4. He served with the 228th Aviation Battalion. While stationed near Bong Son, Vietnam on June 23, 1967 a large CH-54 helicopter crashed near the aircraft refueling station where John was working. Several crew members became pinned inside while the aircraft burned and debris was being thrown. Without thought for himself, John extracted the trapped crewman. He was awarded the Soldier's Medal for his bravery and courage in saving the lives of the entire crew. At the Southfield Civic Center, John has been honored with a brick for his military service.

Once he was honorably discharged and returned home to Metro Detroit, John continued to help and serve, this time through his service as a mail carrier with the United States Post Office in Southfield and later as a Union Rep prior to his retirement in 2010. His service did not end with his job. As a devote man, he served his church family as a Deacon with the Walled Lake Church of Christ.

In his free time, John loved to enjoy the outdoors. Whether fishing, golfing, camping or riding his motorcycle, John loved the fresh air. Many road trips were spent with Judy and his family, towing the bike to a fun new location to explore. He even accompanied Carl on two trips to Sturgis on his bike, a feat he was proud of.

John and Judy loved to spend time with their family and friends, both in Michigan and at their winter home in Gulf Shores, Alabama. A kind and loving man he will be deeply missed by all those who were lucky enough to have known him.

John was the loving husband of Judy for 51 years. Cherished father of Carl (Carrie) and Vicki (Greg). Proud grandpa of Cassidy, Gabrielle, Emily and Riley. Dear brother-in-law of Linda (Bill) Swano and uncle of Billy and Lauren Swano.

The McKissic family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, October 7, 2019 from 3-8 pm at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 340 N. Pontiac Trail in Walled Lake. His life will be celebrated with a Funeral Service on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 9:30 am at Walled Lake Church of Christ, 1367 N. Pontiac Trail in Walled Lake. Friends may visit the church beginning at 9 am on Tuesday.

John will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly Michigan on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at 1:30 pm.
