Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Jacobs (nee: Haberstroh)

MARY ELIZABETH (HABERSTROH) JACOBS of Novi, Michigan, formerly of Dearborn Heights and Farmington Hills, was born January 9, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Haberstroh. She died on May 12, 2018 at the age of 74 after years of courageously living with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She is survived by her loving daughter Cindy (George) Isherwood of White Lake, Michigan and son Mike Jacobs of Novi, Michigan. Proud grandma to Matthew, Megan, Jacob, Kristin Mary and Nicole, brothers Robert (Barbara) Haberstroh, Ronald (Ruth) Haberstroh, lifelong best friend Jane (Pat) Innes, her nieces and nephews, cousins Sandy (Owen) Spencer and Karen (Larry) Johnson.

Mary attended Wilkins Elementary School and graduated from Osborn High School in 1961. She married Ron Jacobs on June 19, 1962 and they were together for 22 years. Mary spent many years involved with her children's schools volunteering as room mother and with the PTA. Over the years, she enjoyed tennis, bowling and softball and was employed with a dental office, Save On Pharmacy, Hydralink, Fort Wayne Mortgage, Met Life, Toys R Us and Walmart as well as working at the election polls in the City of Novi.

Mary attended many churches over the years, including Nardin Park United Methodist Church. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she would talk about them with anyone who would listen. She had a colorful personality, great sense of humor and loved to laugh. She was a great story teller and many of her stories revolved around her family and friends.

Mary became the matriarch of her family and she especially loved Christmas Eve and looked forward to it with great anticipation. She also loved her close friends, Sue, Janice, Joan, and Diane and kept in touch with all of them for as long as she possibly could. She also enjoyed her coworkers and remained friends with many of them. She loved to shop, and Hallmark was among her favorites. She rarely missed a birthday or special occasion, and she always kept an impressive greeting card collection on hand. She was always willing to help anyone she could, driving friends and neighbors to doctor appointments and stores or whatever was asked of her. She especially loved the time she spent at the cottage on the beach in Oscoda and helping her very best friend Jane with quilting projects. She was creative and in addition to quilting she enjoyed craft projects, gardening and photography.

She worked for and held onto her independence for as long as she could. Her sense of humor and love for a good party continued well into her final years at her nursing community. Mary would want to be remembered for her kind heart and terrific sense of humor such and some of her favorite things to say most recently were “It's a good day when you wake up alive” and “You have to laugh otherwise you would cry.” She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her even though many people said their goodbyes long ago due to her long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Her family would like to thank her caregivers at Canterbury on the Lake in Waterford for their kindness, compassion and loving care given to Mary during her time there.

A memorial service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 340 N. Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake (3 Blks. S. of Maple Rd.) Tuesday 6 PM. Friends may visit Tuesday 2 PM until time of service. Memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Canterbury on the Lake for their garden terrace project appreciated.
