Obituary for Peter Choong Nam Song

Peter Choong Nam Song, age 78, passed away on March 30, 2021. Beloved husband to Ok Hi, proud father of four to Anna (Mikael), Heidi (Nathan), Samuel, Jennifer (Nick), and loving grandfather of six (Lila, Paxton, Campbell, Kingston, Olivia, Emily).

Born in Kobe, Japan on March 26, 1943, Peter was a witness to some of the most impactful world and political events of his time. Born during World War 2, Peter was raised by loving grandparents. His grandparents fiercely protected him, particularly during the Korean War. They sought to protect him from regional turmoil and escaped to Jeju Island, taking the infamous Train to Busan.

Peter immigrated to the United States in 1970 and became a United States citizen soon after. He adopted his new country quickly, taking a keen interest in American culture and especially American Politics; he was especially fond of watching Presidential debates every four years. Peter worked for the GM Truck and Bus division for 32 years, finally retiring in 2002.

The Seventh-Day Adventist church was a central part of Peter’s life. He was a founding member of the Detroit Korean Seventh-Day Adventist church and was especially proud to establish the church located in Livonia. Peter was a deeply spiritual and faithful Christian and drew strength from prayer and scripture.

In the remaining days of his life, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Peter was comforted by his wife of 32 years and his days were filled with frequent calls and video chats with his children, grandchildren, and dear friends. Even during his illness, his kindness, selflessness, and light-hearted humor clearly shone through and continued to touch everyone around him.

Funeral and celebration of life to take place on April 2, 2021. Due to safety restrictions, visitation size will be limited to a small private morning service at Detroit Korean Seventh-Day Adventist Church arranged by Lynch & Sons. In accordance with health restrictions, visitors may attend the following interment at Oakland Hills Memorial Cemetery in Novi at 3:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to:
