Obituary for Robert Edward "Bob" Dodd

Robert Edward (Bob) Dodd was a much loved and integral part of many lives – his wife Debra (McIntyre), daughter Colleen, sisters Norma (Warner), Barbara (Cook), Kathleen (Witte), Susan (Haworth), brothers-in-law Norman Witte, Robert Haworth, Gerald (Nancy) McIntyre, James (Rebecca) McIntyre, mother-in-law Virginia McIntyre, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephew, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. We trust Bob was greeted by his mother and father Robert and Betty Dodd, father-in-law James McIntyre, brother-in-law Tom Warner and many others who went before him.

Bob was a man who took great pride in working hard. He spent nearly 30 years in advertising sales, mostly with the Observer-Eccentric Newspapers, where he was recognized as Salesperson of the Year and of the Month numerous times. He ended his career working for Consumers Energy in the Revenue Recovery area. It was a company he loved working for, and where he made many new friends to add to those he made at the newspaper.

He was a proud Central Michigan alumnus (Fire Up Chips!) where he met best friends who would be with him throughout his life, particularly Todd Kloska and Tom Brideau. A devoted Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and college football fan he loved attending and watching games, and could always be counted on for pithy commentary. He coached girls softball in college and coached/played on a successful church softball team for several years.

Bob had many other interests, including a love of music, particularly James Taylor. Through the years he attended more than 30 of his concerts, and fulfilled a lifelong dream to meet JT last summer. Bob had a rich voice and sang in church choirs and participated in community theatre musicals. He was also keenly interested in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and was a guest speaker at Oakland Community College regarding the conspiracy theories. A cat lover, Bob could often be seen with his buddy Wylee on his lap.

He was known for his witty yet dry sense of humor, and family and friends can share many memories of some of his best lines.

Bob was the middle child and only boy out of five children. Norma, Barb, Kathy and Sue can share many memories of their brother, from the way he buttoned his shirts all the way up as a kid, family camping trips, and spending time together as a family. His sisters were by his side every step of his cancer journey.

Married nearly 30 years to Debbie, he was the face of calm during her many “Lucy” moments. The pair enjoyed traveling together, with trips to Fripp Island, SC, San Francisco and a hike into the Grand Canyon especially memorable.

More than anything Bob loved being a father and adored his daughter Colleen. She was and always will be his “Nugget”. He was incredibly proud of her, adored her and supported her at all times.

Bob fought his stage four colon cancer diagnosis for nearly six years with stoicism, grace and incredible strength. He never complained about his illness, the treatments and surgeries, and was an example of bravery and faith to all. He will forever remain in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations in Bob’s name to the following:
