Obituary for Ruth J. Johnson

Ruth J. Johnson, the petite, playful and passionate spirit that was a daughter, cousin, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away August 10, 2017.

Ruthie was born in Detroit to Lillian and Roy Van Nostrand in 1925. An only child, she was blessed with rambunctious cousins that she lived and played with throughout the Great Depression. Her “alley picking” cohort/cousin, John Malloy, was her lifelong “brother of choice.” They grew up, raised families and enjoyed one another’s company until Ruth’s passing.

Ruth married our beloved late father, Keith H. Johnson (d. 2014) in 1952 and shortly thereafter a daughter, Linda (Kris Schulz), and twin sons, Keith (Corinna) and Kirk (Cindy La Rue) were added to the family tree. Ruth worked for many years at Walled Lake Public Schools, first as a substitute secretary at Walled Lake Western High School and then as a full-time secretary at SWOVEC. Upon her retirement, she and our dear father enjoyed many years of travel and fun. When Ruthie needed a travel companion besides our father, Phyllis Valle was ready and willing to join in Ruthies “excellent adventures” and became a constant, loyal companion.

Once the first grandchild arrived in 1986, Ruthie became a loving, devoted and energetic grandmother. Ruth had nine grandchildren: Shea Johnson, Sydney Schulz, Neal Johnson, Keith Johnson, Schuyler Schulz, Evan Schulz, Haeli Johnson, Kelsey Johnson and Kara Johnson. In 2016, Ruth was thrilled to become the great-grandmother of Lillian Joy (Haeli Johnson and Matt Johnson) who was named after Ruth’s mother. Lily’s sweetness and toddler antics provided her great-grandmother with delight and brightened any day she visited. These grandchildren were blessed with the most generous, kind and creative grandmother whose influence, love and joy will be part of their character forever.

Her passion for life and others, her great big laugh (easily recognizable from across the room or across a store) and her gregarious, generous nature will be missed beyond measure. Her bright light continues to shine in those she loved and those who loved her. We are so grateful to call her “ours.”

Graveside committal services will be held on Saturday, September 2 2017 at 10:30 AM, at Commerce Memorial Cemetery, located on the west side of Benstein Road, south of Glengary at 2451 Benstein Road, Commerce Township, MI 48390.
