Obituary for Santiago Osmund Gascon

Santiago Osmund Gascon was born on April 15, 1977, in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. He passed away on February 2, 2020, in West Bloomfield, Michigan, at 42 years old, due to complications from his spinal cord injury.

Santiago emigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings in 1986. He married Maria Caseñas on June 21, 2001, and they have one son, Nicolas Santiago, born December 15, 2003.

Santiago served in the United States Marine Corps from 1998 to 2002 as a combat engineer. He continued his service to his country as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, Rampart Division. While on duty in February 2004, he suffered a spinal cord injury and lived the rest of his life as a quadriplegic.

Santiago was an avid tennis player and an accomplished artist. He loved watching sports and was a huge supporter of Michigan football and the Detroit Pistons. But most of all, he had a smile that lit up a room and an infectious laugh. The world is a little dimmer without him in it.

Santiago is survived by his wife Maria, son Nicolas, parents Eriberto and Irma Gascon, sister Idamae Avellanosa, brother Francis Gascon, in-laws Luis and Josie Caseñas, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his older sister Maria Victoria Gascon.

The funeral mass is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Monday, February 10 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in West Bloomfield.  Visitation begins at 2:30 p.m. immediately preceding the mass.  All will be welcome to dine with the family afterwards at Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant in West Bloomfield.
