Obituary for Susan Virginia Moore (Ferguson)

Susan Virginia (Ferguson) Moore was born in Detroit, Michigan to Harry and Virginia Moore.

She leaves behind one daughter, Marilynn Emily Ferguson of Florida and one sister Charlotte Moore-Viculin of Dearborn Heights.

Susan came from a musical family - her mother had extensive piano lessons and her father, an engineer, also played the piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 5 at the Detroit Conservatory of Music and graduated with a performing and teaching degree at the age of 15. While at Mumford High School in Detroit she wanted to be in the band and took private trumpet lessons from Otto Schmeizer, teacher of several Detroit Symphony musicians. After High School she went to Wayne State University where she became the first woman to achieve and hold First Chair Trumpet Position in the Wayne State Concert Band - a position she held for her last 2 years at Wayne.

As a teenager she formed a 5 piece all girl band called the Susie Q Band. She played trumpet and her sister Charlotte played piano. The band once played on the Soupy Sales TV Show. As the band members grew older they became more interested in boys than in playing in the band so Susan switched to a larger all male band where she played piano. This was successful as the boys were more interested in making money than in dating.

Also as a teenager Susan started teaching piano at home to neighborhood children. Later she opened her first studio in the Wurlitzer Building in downtown Detroit and also worked as head of the sheet music department at Grinnells Music Store. While working at Grinnells she met her husband, also a musician, as he was buying his music.

Over the years she taught in her sister’s music studio in Plymouth, followed by teaching at Wonderland Music in Novi for several years, finally opening her own studio about 15 years ago on Pontiac Trail in Walled Lake. Her sister Charlotte will now take over the studio.

Throughout her lifetime, Susan played many “Gigs” - weddings, parties, restaurants and bars, which she continued until recently. She was an excellent music arranger and every piece she played had her own signature style. For the United State Bicentennial in 1976 she wrote a piece entitled “Bicentennial Year”. She loved jazz and met many famous “Jazzers”.

As a teacher she belonged to the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs and the National Guild of Piano Teachers giving her students opportunities to compete at local, state and national levels. Many students stayed with her from Kindergarten until they went away to college, winning awards through the years which she presented at an annual recital. She also taught adults.

Susan was a casual person and loved the rural area that Commerce was back in the 60’s. As a young person she bought land, designed her house and had it built. She has loved living in Commerce all these years, although she has not liked the surrounding area turning into the city.

She had a heart of gold and volunteered as a counselor to the homeless and needy at Cross Roads, an affiliate of the Episcopal Church in Detroit. Even after she became too busy to continue her work there, she always remembered how satisfying it was to help the people who sought the services of Cross Roads.

Susan was fabulous teacher and musician, totally honest and trustworthy. The musical world has lost a great champion.
