Obituary for William "Liam" Fairbanks

William Lloyd Fairbanks (Liam) passed from this mortal life on August 4, 2020, at 19 years of age after a courageous three year battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his family whose lives he has forever touched and inspired.

Liam was born on November 9, 2000, in Lake Forest, Illinois and moved at a young age to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where he attended Way Elementary and Bloomfield Hills Middle School, before graduating from Bloomfield Hills High School.  His teachers and friends remember him as an exceptionally hard-working student, who was especially known for his contagious smile and witty sense of humor.  Liam enjoyed sports, especially running with the varsity high school XC team where he earned varsity letters 3 years in a row, earned a scholar athlete award and received the Blackhawk Spirit award.  Liam earned his Eagle Scout award, was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, played clarinet in the marching band, and enjoyed many activities and games with his family and friends.

Liam has been an inspiration to many. Through his difficult journey the last few years, he demonstrated tremendous courage, faith, and optimism.  He never complained about his unexpected challenges. His wonderful smiling face and sense of humor would continually light up the room and his playful spirit will forever remain with us.  He has touched our souls in a way nothing else could.  Those of us who were fortunate to have experienced his warmth, strength, and courage have been truly blessed.

He is survived by his mother Heather Hansen Fairbanks (Troy Kilpatrick), his brother Walker Fairbanks, step-siblings Britton, Colin and Cameron Kilpatrick and his father Isamu Fairbanks (Heather O’Neill Fairbanks) and stepsisters Tori, Morgan and Emma. Also, survived by his grandparents Lloyd E. Hansen, Janet Hansen, Nancy Brinton, Herbert G. Brinton, B. Jay Fairbanks, Hideko Fairbanks; his great-grandmother Joan Carlson; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Private family graveside committal services will be held at Franklin Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to highlight the following organizations who have been a source of strength for the family and encourage a donation (in Liam’s honor) to one or more of the following: Hospice of Michigan/Anchors Program for Children, Angels of Hope, Rainbow Connection, The Jenna Kast Foundation, New Day Foundation, Catch Some Air, and Wish Upon a Teen. In addition, a fund in Liam’s name at St Jude has been established by Isamu and Heather O’Neill Fairbanks- Link attached (https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR;jsessionid=00000000.app20013a?fr_id=39300&px=6698873&pg=personal&NONCE_TOKEN=5D0DC95612BC029A3E3629DC908C94A3)
