Obituary for Kathryne Tolkacz

Kathryne Estelle Tolkacz of Troy was born October 3, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan to Emmet and Emaline (nee: Verrchle) Michaels. She died June 6, 2021 at the age of 96.

Mrs. Tolkacz is the beloved wife of 72 years to Walter Joseph Tolkacz. Loving mother of Kathleen Brennan and Stephanie (Michael) Burns. Dear grandmother of Jamie (Tim), Jenny (Andy), Jessie (Scott), Jackie (Jason), Timmy, Hannah (Sean) and Heather. Great-grandmother of Ella Grace, Brennan, Caroline, Henry, Matthew, Violet, Emma, James, Madelyn, Vivian, Ella Foley and Vada.

Mr. and Mrs. Tolkacz married on May 5, 1949, raised their daughters in Oak Park, and later moved to Troy in 1969. Mrs. Tolkacz worked as a book binder for Parke-Davis in Detroit and then she became a Homemaker. She was highly proficient in Latin and shorthand. She was passionate about gardening and she knew all of the flower names by heart, including all the Latin names. She loved sharing her plants with her family, seeds and bulbs too. Kathryne was lovingly called Grandma Fifi. She enjoyed shopping with and for her daughters and grandchildren, spoiling each of them on their birthdays, at Christmastime, and during special sleepovers and shopping trips to the local mall. She also sent each daughter and grandchild a typewritten letter almost weekly with ‘few bucks encl’ and she would procure ‘Boxes’ of household necessities that she would give to each of her daughters and grandchildren every time she saw them. Kathryne and Walter enjoyed travel, word puzzles, watching old movies together, and exercise. Grandma loved her coffee and desserts too. Kate and Walt enjoyed going out to eat and were regulars at Peabody’s Restaurant in Birmingham and later Lukich Family Restaurant in Troy.

Private family services will be held with burial at Wixom Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Oudolf Garden Detroit or the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy.
